Much like the public, the Philadelphia business community is against animal cruelty and is overwhelmingly against the sale of foie gras. Owners, managers, and associates from over 300 Center City and University City-area businesses have already signed our petition in support of Councilman Kelly's bill to ban foie gras, including nearly 100 restaurants or other food establishments. Businesses in Center City and University City were approached about the issue because these are the only areas in the city where foie gras is known to be sold. In our informal survey of businesses, approximately 85% supported a ban on foie gras and signed our petition to City Council, with only 5% opposing the foie gras ban and the remaining 10% being indifferent or having an individual or company policy against signing. **Notes on Survey Methodology and Details

We offer our apologies for any names above which are spelled incorrectly. Some individuals did not sign the petition very clearly, and we did our best to discern the name but undoubtedly some names have been misspelled or misconstrued. We have retained copies of the signed petition and they are available for viewing should any discrepancy arise.

The petition was circulated by having unpaid volunteers enter Center City and University City businesses to ask if they would sign the petition. A pamphlet about foie gras production was offered to provide additional information if requested. Volunteers attempted to speak to an owner or manager whenever possible, but when not possible spoke to whatever business associate was available. As such, aside from owners' signatures the entries above should NOT be construed as an official endorsement by the named business. Only ground-level storefronts were visited, with an emphasis on independently-owned businesses, and many establishments were not entered because the number of customers would have made it incovenient for a store owner, manager, or associate to take the time to review and sign the petition. Percentages given above are based on the experiences of the volunteers who circulated the petition. While they are not scientifically-produced results, they very closely match the results of a 2006 Zogby poll of Pennsylvania residents on their attitudes towards foie gras.

The full petition which the above-named individuals signed reads:
"We Say YES! to the Philadelphia City Council's ban on foie gras. "Foie gras," a delicacy food item served in only a handful of restaurants in Philadelphia, is the enlarged, diseased liver of a duck or goose. A metal pipe is jammed down the throats of animals and they are force-fed three times a day, until their liver swells to 10 times its normal size. These animals are also kept in pens where they cannot move around, and frequently suffer from disease and injury. 15 countries, the state of California, and the city of Chicago have all banned foie gras. A recent poll showed an overwhelming majority of Pennsylvanians oppose the cruel methods used in foie gras produciton. I SUPPORT Councilman Jack Kelly's bill to ban the sale of foie gras in Philadelphia."
