It's Time to End This Gourmet Cruelty! Foie gras is a French "delicacy" produced by inserting a metal tube down the throats of ducks and geese and force-feeding them until their livers swell to ten times the normal size. A 2006 Zogby poll found that 85% of Pennsylvania residents believe foie gras is cruel and want it banned. Over the past two years, over thirty top-rated Philadelphia restaurants - including the Zagat Guide's "Top Food," "Most Popular Restaurant," and "Restaurateur of the Year" winners - have taken foie gras off the menu for good. Philadelphia City Councilman Jack Kelly has introduced a bill, similar to one passed in Chicago, that would ban the sale of foie gras in Philadelphia. The Pennsylvania SPCA, the Mayor's Alliance for Animals, and the Humane Society of the US all support this bill. Not only are the overwhelming majority of city professionals and Center City businesses opposed to foie gras, hundreds have already signed on in support of Councilman Kelly's bill to ban foie gras. It seems like everyone is speaking out against foie gras these days. From leading Philadelphia restaurateur Stephen Starr ("I think it is cruel - probably ethically wrong"), to local duck farmers Tom Colbaugh and Jean Nick ("We encourage Philadelphia to ban the sale of foie gras"), to area veterinarian Rob Teti, DVM ("It is sad that something as primitive and deplorable as the foie gras industry still exists"), the consensus is clear: foie gras is cruel and should be banned and boycotted. Please use this site to learn more about foie gras, find which restaurants should be boycotted for serving this cruel dish, and encourage City Council to pass Bill 060476 to ban the sale of foie gras! |
